The 10 most frequently asked questions about Innr’s new smart LED strip

The 10 most frequently asked questions about Innr’s new smart LED strip

Colour LED strips are popular, and for good reason. They’re cost-effective, safe (low voltage) and flexible, and they can quickly and easily help you create colour accents in your home. We’ve compiled 10 of the most frequently asked questions about LED strips in general and Innr’s new smart LED strip.

I think I’ve seen LED strips before, but what is a LED strip exactly?

Basically it’s a flexible low voltage self-adhesive strip with lots of LED-lights on it. Power is provided by a plug-in type power supply. The light comes from RGB (Red, Green, Blue) LEDs, which means they can give any colour of light, including all shades of white. The best products combine RGB LEDs and white LEDs (e.g. the Innr Flex Colour) for more powerful and more natural white light.

What’s so smart about the Innr LED strip?

The strip can be controlled with an app. Use your smartphone to switch the light on or off, dim the light or change its colour, all 4 metres of it! Or you can make your life easier with a timer setting to switch on your light strip at sunset and switch them off again at midnight. Or whenever you fancy.

Does the Innr LED strip also work with my Philips Hue system?

Yes! Just keep in mind that Homekit is not supported which unfortunately means you can’t use it with Siri. Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant are supported in combination with a Hue bridge. The Innr LED strip also works with SmartThings and, of course, with the Innr system.

Is the Innr LED strip better than other smart LED strips?

We would like to think that it is ;-)

The strip is twice as long as the Philips Hue LED strip (just to be precise: 4 metres) and has a smaller distance between the diodes (also known as the pitch) for a smoother light effect. This means less dark spaces or spotting between each LED.

Great! But why do I need it?

Light strips are typically used for decorative accent lighting to create more ambiance or for extra light in dark areas. Popular applications areas are the kitchen, where they are used under cabinets or the kitchen plinth; in the living room as cove lighting, bookshelf lighting or curtain lighting, and in stairwells for extra ambiance and visibility.

16 Million colours sounds like a lot. What colours would work for me?

Colours are fun, but too many colours may be too much of a good thing.

Rule #1: Think about the atmosphere you’d like to create. During the day, fresh colours are best (blues or greens); a more modern daytime colour is purple. During the evening, it’s best to avoid cool colours but focus more on red, orange and yellow tones. If you’re wondering why, give it a go! (Hint: blues and greens can give you a ghostlike appearance!)

Are LED strips bright enough? Or are they perhaps too bright?

Our LED strip provides 1000 lumens maximum; that’s approximately the same output as 100W bulb. For most situations this is more than enough. Usually you’ll want less light. It’s good to know that the Innr LED strip is dimmable up to 0.1%, so ideal for late night ambiance lighting or gentle early morning wake-up light.

Can I use them outside?

Unfortunately, that’s not a good idea. The Innr Flex Light RGBW has been designed for indoor use. Some water on the strip during cleaning is fine but rain and large temperature fluctuations are not good for the LED strip.

4 Metres sounds like a lot of strip! Can I make it shorter?

Yes, you can! And they will still work, provided you cut them at a cut mark. These marks are spaced at 16.6 cm. The best bit: you don’t have to throw out the part you’ve cut off. You can still use it with the second cable that is included.

Anything else I should know before I install the Innr LED strip?

Be gentle if you want to go round corners. Definitely don’t make sharp folds. It’s best to cut the strip instead, using separate power cables for both lengths. If you can’t avoid sharp corners or bends, consider another product e.g. the Innr Strip, which is a good alternative for more compact bookshelves.

How to use Innr lights for extra vacation security

How to use Innr lights for extra vacation security

For many people, vacations are something to look forward to: some time away from home and obligations all around to relax, enjoy quality time with the family and put your feet up. Yet there is the nagging issue of your house: how do we keep burglars afar when the house is clearly dark at all times?

Here’s where smart lighting can be a handy solution for this. Innr Lighting offers the possibility to create Timers and Programs in the app to make all your lights run on set times during the whole week. To make full use of the possibilities, open the app and scroll down to Programs & Timers in the 'Rooms' screen. You will need an Innr Bridge and the Innr app for this, including connected Innr lights.

Programs & Timers

A Timer is a fixed moment at which a light turns on or off or takes on a scene that you have set. A Program is a series of Timers. If you are in the screen 'Programs & Timers', you will see the icon of a '+' twice. The upper one is a larger size icon and is the start of a new Program, the smaller below is a new Timer.

An example of a Timer is, for example, "Wake up":
Timer 1: Wake up in Master Bedroom at 07.00.

An example of a Program is, for example, "Morning routine":
Timer 1: Wake up in Master Bedroom at 07.00.
Timer 2: Lights on in Bathroom at 07.05.
Timer 3: Lights on in Kitchen at 07.15.

Put these three Timers together (because they all belong to getting up in the morning) and they form a Program. To create a Program, you must start as a Program – you can’t put single Timers together in a Program at a later stage.

The Morning Program

Credibility

You want to make it seem as if you and your family are actually moving through the house. Think about your routine: what time do you usually get up? What time do you leave the house? What time do you return home and do you go to the Kitchen or Living Room first? You can’t be in two places at once, so work with different timings for different rooms. Have a few minutes in between Timers for rooms – for instance, after brushing your teeth in the Bathroom upstairs, normally you would walk down several minutes later and switch the Kitchen lights on. Just do the same now in the Program – just don’t forget to add several Timers for the lights upstairs to also switch off again!

You can start with making a Program for mornings and for evenings, as that is probably the time most people are home. See how that’s working out for you and make adjustments as you go to leave for the holiday with a relaxed and safe feeling. Start now and you'll have plenty of time to fine tune before the holidays are here.
To really have an advantage on anyone with bad intentions, go the extra mile and make a few Programs with different timings every day: that way, the Timers and Programs are not always exactly the same, which could be a tell that it’s automated. If you need any help with this setup, contact us directly via service@innr.com.

Enjoy your holidays!

How to choose the right colour smart bulb

How to choose the right colour smart bulb

Gone are the days of just buying a 60W incandescent light bulb that you would probably consider suitable for most lighting purposes in your home. Nowadays, LED bulbs have all but replaced the old incandescent bulb. And a new type of LED bulb is becoming increasingly popular: the smart bulb. These bulbs offer some appealing advantages:

· They can be controlled wirelessly so are really easy to use.

· They dim without needing to install dimmers. This means you can create an ambience or mood easily without first having to get the electrician to come round.

· They usually come with an app with a timer feature. This feature can boost your sense of security because your home never needs to look empty. You can let the app switch on your lights to make it appear as if you are at home even when you’re out. You can also come home to a lit house without leaving the lights on when you leave in the morning.

Some smart bulbs even offer you the option of extra warm white light or all the colours under the rainbow. This post is all about colour - from shades of white to coloured light – and what to use when and how.

White

Let’s start with warm white dimmable light. This category of smart bulbs can best be compared with the trusted incandescent light bulb and is probably your best choice for an affordable smart bulb. It can be used anywhere in your home and is probably the easiest way to create the ambience or when you’re looking or heighten your sense of security with lighting. Our E27 Bulb falls into this category and is priced at 16 euro.

Tunable white

Next up is tunable white light; bulbs in this category have added feature of adjustable light temperature. This makes it possible to control both the colour temperature and light intensity, so you can choose how cool or warm you have your lighting, as well as the brightness of your lighting - ideal for creating ambience and extra comfort in your living room, dining room and bedroom. This is a good option if you want to be able to change the type of lighting from functional lighting (working, reading etc.,) to more cozy lighting (dining, watching TV etc.,). The Innr E27 Bulb Tunable White falls into this category and is priced at 25 euro.

Colour

The final category is the coloured smart bulb. Also called RGBW because it uses Red Green Blue and White LEDs. Basically these bulbs offer you the possibility to select any colour you like from 16 million colours. Imagine being able to ‘paint’ a wall in any colour without having to pick up a paintbrush! And then changing the colour again within seconds! You could also combine colour bulbs to create really unique decorative colour effects. This category is the best choice for decorative light accents inside and outside your home. Bulbs in the colour category can also create all the white tints, so are in fact the most flexible bulbs. Innr’s E27 Bulb RGBW falls into this category and is priced at 35 euro.

There are clearly many more lighting possibilities available to you with smart LED bulbs. By thinking about where and how you want to use your lighting, the ambience and mood you want to create and your budget, you are hopefully now better equipped to make the right choice.
